THE LEGEND OF GEMSTONES

Legend of the Gemstone

In the Bible, Job declares, “Only wisdom is more valuable than rubies.” Meanwhile, in some ancient Indian texts, the ruby is hailed as “the most precious of the twelve gemstones created by God when He fashioned all things.” Legend holds that those who wear rubies will enjoy “good health and long life, prosperity and wealth, and a love that is both fulfilling and blissful.” It is further said that if one wears a ruby ring on the left hand or adorns the left side with a ruby pendant, it bestows a magical power to turn misfortune into good fortune and transform enemies into friends. As the birthstone for July, the ruby—beneath the blazing July sun—shimmers in dazzling harmony with its fiery red glow, inspiring vitality and a spirit of striving forward. For this reason, rubies are often likened to passionate love and have become the symbolic gemstone of the 40th wedding anniversary.

Sapphire evokes images of the lofty sky and the tranquil sea—clear, serene, and profoundly still. Since ancient times, Eastern cultures have regarded sapphire as a protective talisman or as a sacred gem set into ecclesiastical regalia. In the Western tradition, sapphire is known as the “stone of wisdom,” symbolizing compassion, honesty, intelligence, and noble character. It is also seen as an emblem of integrity and distinguished virtue, and it has long been the traditional birthstone for September. The 45th wedding anniversary is celebrated as the Sapphire Anniversary. During the Qing dynasty, sapphire was also the ornamental jewel adorning the topknot of officials holding the rank of third grade.

GEMSTONE JEWELRY MAINTENANCE

Care and Maintenance of Ruby and Sapphire Jewelry

1: When engaging in sports or performing heavy labor, avoid wearing ruby and sapphire jewelry to prevent collisions that could result in irreparable damage.

2: Do not store ruby and sapphire jewelry together with other pieces in the same drawer or jewelry box. Because gemstones and metals vary in hardness, they can rub against one another and become scratched or worn.

3: When wearing ruby and sapphire jewelry, be sure to have it inspected once a month. If any settings become loose, have them repaired promptly.

4: Like other gemstones, rubies and sapphires can lose their luster when exposed to the oils and sweat secreted by the human body. Therefore, if worn regularly, they should be cleaned once a month.

Cleaning Ruby and Sapphire Jewelry

1: The simplest cleaning method is to wash with mild soapy water and a soft-bristled brush.

2: After cleaning, place the jewelry on a lint-free towel to air dry.

3: Wax-free dental floss or toothpicks can be used to remove dirt from the gemstone and between the prongs.

4: Never use bleach. The chlorine in bleach can cause pitting on alloys, degrade the alloy, and even corrode welds.

5: Avoid using laundry detergents, cleaning agents, and toothpaste containing abrasives for cleaning.

6: Do not clean in detergents or acids.
